Description:
During the French Revolution, the use of public opinion as a political tool truly transformed the most influential ideas, individuals, and physical spaces. Spaces such as coffeehouses were integral to the formation of the new bourgeois public sphere, and the ideological rhetoric of the Revolution. However, what if the cultural origins of the French Revolution, or at least some aspects of it, weren’t French at all, much less European? In my paper I will ask in what ways could the French Revolution be looked at more transnationally, and transculturally, within the formation of an emergent public opinion. Building on the many cultural histories of the French Revolution, I am proposing an attempt to locate some of the ideological movements of the French Revolution outside France itself, through the institution of the coffeehouse.
