Description:
This thesis assesses the performance of Canadian troops in their first sustained ground operations of the Second World War. It reviews training, doctrine and leadership to provide a detailed analysis of Canadian Army operations in Sicily and Italy during the period July 1943 to June 1944. Three separate operations serve as case studies in this examination of Canadian combat performance: the campaign in Sicily, the extended battles at the Moro River and before ortona, and the Canadian advance through the Hitler Line into the Liri valley.
